The Revision Kickstart Guide, but make it live!

Hi Reader,

If you’re reading this email right now, there’s a very good chance that you came to me through my Revision Kickstart Guide.

I originally created this guide to introduce writers to the part of the revision process that most frequently gets skipped, forgotten, or ignored.

Specifically, the prep phase.

I’ve given the Kickstart Guide out at conferences, on my website, and on the podcast. There have been a couple of different iterations, and this one PDF has brought so many amazing writers into my little corner of the Internet.

Now, that little guide is growing up and becoming a FREE live challenge that runs from September 22nd - 24th, and you’re all invited!

The challenge won’t be identical to the PDF version. Think of this as the Revision Kickstart 2.0.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • What it really means to get your book ready for readers
  • Why trying to write for everyone in the world means you’re really writing for no one
  • How to create a revision plan that puts readers first without losing your book’s soul
  • How to set revision priorities that keep you focused & efficient instead of overwhelmed and scattered
  • And more!

And here are the logistical details:

Each day will start with a 9:00am email (EDT) with a short pre-work assignment & an intro to the day's topic.

Calls will happen daily at 3:30pm from Tuesday 9/22 to Thursday 9/24 (you can check your time zone here).

This challenge is 100% free.

Replays will be posted within 2 hours of each call’s end and available until 10/4.

Wondering if this challenge is for you? It is.

  • If you’re thinking that the prep phase doesn’t matter and you should just forge ahead with your revision, you need this challenge.
  • If you’re so overwhelmed by revision that you don’t even know where to start, you need this challenge.
  • If you’ve been revising for months and feel like you’re still right where you started, you need this challenge.
  • If you’re even thinking about revising your novel soon, you need this challenge!

A successful revision doesn’t start with jumping in on page one and just winging it as you figure out where you went wrong throughout the draft.

A successful revision starts when you’re 100% certain of what you’re trying to create, and this challenge is going to give you the jumpstart you need.

If you’re ready to kick-start your revision process and finally figure out what it will take to make your story work for readers, I’ll see you in the challenge soon!

Better Living

This Saturday, I’m flying off to Arizona to officiate my second wedding. When we’re not celebrating my future brother-in-law and his bride, I’ll have some downtime in the Sedona area.

If you’re from there or have traveled there in the past, I’d love your recommendations!

Restaurants, hikes, off-beat attractions we shouldn’t miss - throw them my way!!

Thanks!!

Better Reading

It’s been a busy week (did I mention I’m officiating a wedding next week…?) and Recipes for an Unexpected Afterlife* by Deston J. Munden continues to be the cozy fantasy comfort food I’ve needed.

Thank you for reading, have a wonderful week, and happy writing!

With love,

Olivia

Hi Reader, All of my edits start with a pre-project survey. I ask about the client’s writing history, their goals, and the things that they are most concerned about in their draft. A recent client started the edit telling me they wanted to create the next Sarah J Maas-level bestseller. There’s just one problem. Their genre and themes are too niche. But that’s not a bad thing. Is this writer likely to become a household name? Nope. (Sorry, I’m not in the business of selling false promises)....

Hi Reader, On Monday, I officiated my second wedding in Sedona (and yes, that’s why this newsletter came out behind schedule). Everything went well except for the part where I forgot to tell everyone to sit down after they stood for the bride’s entrance (I blame a combination of nerves & the fact that it wasn’t written into my script). Oops… Thankfully, it was an intimate micro-wedding, and everyone had a good laugh when the photographer finally came up the aisle motioning for people to sit....

Hi Reader, Tools beat rules every day I had a conversation with a writer recently that made me a little sad and a little angry. Not because of the writer - she was wonderful - but because of the struggle she’d gone through before finding me and the misapplied advice that led her down that winding road draft after draft after draft. She’d been told to show instead of tell. So she was trying her best to show everything. But here’s the thing: “show, don’t tell” is a massive oversimplification....
